After a nice morning-mids Silvanill, Orumkin and myself went down the street further closely followed Mook and Garnet. Most of the shops had wooden verandas with either a small ramp or one step to get onto them. Asking about the trade side of things, Matt in the farm equipment store said, ‘You see, my Lords, when you need anything, all you do is to bring the old or broken one in and it’s swapped for a new or fixed one.

‘We all work hard so food is just a given. Old Col or the shops here like Frank’s butchers, as long as there’s no greed you get what you ask for. Almost all the food comes from your and other farms here anyway. Life’s simple and good. How’s the new equipment on your place going, Lord Tedanill, have you used it yet?’

‘Yes, I have thanks, Matt. Old Grumps and I were ploughing just a few days ago and it was great.’

‘Mind you,’ said Matt, ‘you have a good horse in Frost.’

‘That I have,’ I replied, ‘he didn’t even break into a sweat as he pulled the plough.’

Matt patting me on the back said, ‘Everyone is right, you’re good people and we’re glad to have you here.’ He offered a hand to Silvanill then ruffling Orumkin around the chest gently as she snorted with playful pushing and squirming into his big coarse hands.

Matt took out his pocket watch and said, ‘Sorry, my Lords, but it is almost twelve and my wife will be expecting me for lunch. You’re welcome to join me if you like.’

‘Thank you, Matt,’ I said, ‘but we’ll have to make it another time. I have an appointment this afternoon. We will call on you and your wife in a few weeks if that’s alright. I’ll drop by and let you know.’

‘Alright,’ replied Matt, ‘why Gale will be so pleased to have you visit and take time for us, she won’t sleep for a week with excitement.

‘One thing, my Lords, can I ask a question of you both in private while I have the time?’

‘Yes of course,’ I replied.

Matt looked embarrassed, ‘Well,’ he said sheepishly, ‘I’ve been asked to make weapons on the quiet, swords and things, pieces of armour. We all see the dark growing and there’s a rumour is there’s to be a war. I’ll wait to be told but I just wanted to say we are all behind you both and I’d be honoured to stand right by your side if you need me. Well, that’s all I meant to say.’

‘The honour,’ I said, grabbing his shoulder, ‘would be mine to have people such as yourself standing by my side. You will be informed about it all, but you will only be brought into the war to protect the patches not on the front attack. Please, let this be our secret. Risking the lives of town folk is a last resort, although there will be fighting as some of their army sneak through but you will not be alone, so be assured I will do all I can to protect you from as much as I can.
